Eritrean laws mandate that non Eritrean citizens must reside in Eritrea for at least six consecutive months prior to adopting Eritrean children. Prospective parents must be at least 25 years of age and no older than 50 and additionally be 21 years older than the child at the time of the adoption. Same sex couples are not allowed to adopt in Eritrea. A total of four children were adopted from Eritrea in 2011.
